Since yesterday I got a strange Outlook Express message.

"To free up disk space outlook express can compact messages"

I call it strange as I don't have OE installed, because I'm using Outlook.

So looking around in my system to see if there was some OE instance somewhere I didn't find anything.  Googling for this problem gave me the solution.
The problem is with Windows Desktop Search.  it seems that by default OE is defined as an indexed location.  So there are three steps needed to solve this problem.

1) Close the message box with cancel
2) Click on the magnifying glass of Windows Desktop Search and choose Windows Desktop Search Options from the menu. You will see that OE is listed under "Included Locations". Click the modify button to bring up the "Indexed Locations popup".  Uncheck the Microsoft Outlook Express: Main Identity entry.
3) Open regedit and navigate to this key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID}\Software\Microsoft\Outlo ok Express\5.0.  Replace GUID with the long number used for your identy.  I had only one GUID so it was easy. In the right pane double click on "Compact Check Count" and set the value to zero. Close regedit en restart your computer.

It solved the problem for me.  But I saw the counter was going up again.  So maybe in e few months I got the message again.  We will see.

Yep, the first problem I got with windows 7 64-bit, Office 2010 64-bit and Windows Mobile Device Center.

Using windows 7 64bit, you need to install the Windows Mobile Device Center 64-bit.  No problem when using Office 2007.
But after I installed Office 2010 64-bit, no synchronization is made with my HTC mobile phone.

So I reinstalled the Mobile center and then I got the message that he can't find outlook.  So what's the problem?

It seems that Windows Mobile center isn't up to date to use with the 64-bit version of Office 2010.

How to resolve?
Well you could de-install office 2010 64-bit and reinstall the 32-bit version.  But as I have a 64-bit processor this is stupid.
Another solution is to use google mail to sync with Outlook and then to sync with your mobile phone.

None of them has my interest.  So I hope that MS will soon release a new version of their mobile center.  As this is so stupid for the moment.

It seems that when you install the Google App Sync Plugin for Microsoft Outlook, that some functionality in Outlook will be disabled.

These 2 issues are known:

  • Disable of the Outlook search functionality
  • Disable the Outlook connector (if installed)

Read all info and how to solve them on the Microsoft Office Outlook team Blog: http://blogs.msdn.com/outlook/archive/2009/06/17/google-apps-sync-disables-outlook-search.aspx

when using word on a dual screen, and it's maximized there could be a problem when you try to restore the window.  After restoring it, the screen fully disappears.

The solution for this is very easy : after restoring the window, choose the option move.  use your keyboard arrow keys to move it around.  Even when you don't see the blue bar as it seems off the screen, at a certain moment you should be able to bring it back on your screen.

Yes it's possible.  The announcement is made at PDC.

The next version of Office will also include a browser based version of Word, Excel, Onenote and Powerpoint.  They aren't the full blown version but kind of express or lightweight versions.  The user can create, edit and collaborate office documents through the browser.  It will work on all browsers except Google Chrome.

Finally a new weekly links list.  The previous one was more then a month ago :-(.  One of the reasons is that I hadn't much time and I'm also having troubles with my knee.  In about 4 weeks I'm going to have an operation and then I'm out for at least 3-4 weeks.

I got a strange error with Excel 2007.  I copy an existing XLSX file that I can open without any problems.  I rename the file and opens the copy of it.  Now I got following error

If I click "Yes" the file ops and I got following message

The log just mentioneing nothing special as the same error message.  When I want to save this file, the popup for a new filename is coming up.  I can overwrite the original copy without any problem.  Afterwards the file also opens without any problem. For the rest everything in the file is working.  When I copy this file again, the same problem comes up.  It seems that copying the file will make the file corrupt.

By searching the net I found several solutions which doesn't apply this problem.  There are no Pivot tables or links to external files in.  Only listvalues on another sheet in the same workbook.

If I copy the file to another disk, there's no problem.  It seems more a problem on the network disk I use. I already found something with the date time stamp of the file. Don't know for the moment what's wrong with it.  Have to look for it.

Since June 13, the Microsoft Office Outlook team has started a blog. You can find it here. Although there are not that many posts yet, it seems that they have released an Outlook add-in that allows you to access your Windows Live Hotmail account from within Outlook 2003 or 2007.
